After 53 years in business, one of the last surviving mom-and-pop shops in the Bay Area, Village Stationers, is closing its last two locations.

The now-iconic store first opened its doors in 1966 in Palo Alto and expanded its business to several other locations throughout the Bay Area. Owner Kerry Hoctor said “The challenges today are no secret to anybody. For brick and mortar stores, it’s just brutal,” and directly cited the exploding rent costs in the area and the $15 an hour minimum wage as the main driving-forces behind what was a difficult decision.
